Accelerating the Abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation

The project seeks to ensure, children, families and communities in Samburu, Kajiado, Marsabit and West Pokot are able to reject harmful practices and respond to violence, and adopt positive social norms, and utilize child protection services.

KEY ACTIVITIES

 

  • Community members knowledge and skills are enhanced on policies and legislations on FGM/C and child marriage and have adopted Alternative Rites of Passage(ARP) for girls and boys in Samburu, Kajiado, Marsabit and West Pokot Counties 
  • Relevant and responsible authorities, humanitarian agencies, civil society organization have improved capacity to coordinate child protection issues including FGM/C and related adverse gender norms in Samburu, Kajiado, Marsabit and  West Pokot Counties
  • Partnerships with religious groups and institutions (schools) are strengthened as a platform in advancing child protection issues including FGM/C and child marriage
  • Media campaigns and other forms of communication dissemination are organized and implemented to support and publicize FGM/C abandonment
  • Training of 600 women and 600 men to carry out and facilitate community dialogues
  • Community dialogues between men and women on FGM/C (reaching 2,900 men and 2,900 women)
  • Training of 800 youth to carry out  and facilitate youth dialogue on FGM/C
  • Community dialogues between youth on FGM/C (female 2,000 and 2,000 male)
  • Training of 400 boys and 400 girls on FGM/C and to led and facilitate dialogues
  • Community dialogues between girls and boys to discuss adverse effects of FGM/C, child marriage and advocate for its abandonment in the four target counties
  • Training of 80 reformed circumcisers on FGM/C and income generating activities and linking them to women enterprise fund and micro finance institutions
  • Community and village Declaration against FGM/C
  • Training  of 80 community committees organizing declaration against FGM/C on issues of follow-up and monitoring of FGM/C cases or girls at risk in the community
  • Alternative Rites of Passages for  4,000 girls  
  • Support the training of  1,200 out of school children  (600 boys and 600 girls)  on advocacy against harmful practices, child governance and protection
  • Support to the Child Protection Technical Working Group on coordination and monitoring of FGM/C issues
  • Capacity development of  40 (20 male and 20 female) relevant government officials, local CBO managers and experts on Evidence Based Programming
  • Support to the BI-annual consultative forums with members of county assembly and county executives on FGM/C and child marriage county action plans
  • Training of 200 (130 male and 70 female) duty bearers including the police officers, health staff, journalist and Area Chiefs on child protection including  FGM/C and referral pathway
  • Training of 60 (30 male and 30 female) primary and secondary school club patrons on child protection including FGM/C and child marriage issues, reporting  and referral pathway
  • Support the training of 1,200 school going children (600 boys and 600 girls)  on advocacy against harmful practices, child governance and protection.
  • Support 20 schools to undertake music/drama and essay competition with Anti-FGM/C, Child marriage and other child protection issues
  • Training of 120 (80 male and 40 female) religious leaders on child protection including  FGM/C and child marriage issues and Anti- FGM/C and child marriage advocacy
  • Media campaigns and other forms of communication dissemination are organized and implemented to support and publicize FGM/C abandonment     
  • Talk shows and radio spot advert
  • Calendar Advocacy Days and Celebrations including Sixteen Days of Activism against GBV, The Day of African Child, Universal day of Girl Child and Zero Tolerance Day against FGM/C
