Yupita Domini: Skilled at Showcasing Hope

Wednesday, August 16, 2017

Call her Yupita, 40-year-old woman who enthusiastically colors each day of her life with various activities. On a daily basis, Yupita works as a makeup artist for brides. However, she expands her routine by actively taking part in various events held by World Vision Indonesia. For example, one of the activities is a sewing course held at the region in which she lives in. Yupita lives next to the Trans Kalimantan Street (West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia)  that is occupied with a commotion of the traffic and the sounds of honking vehicles. Nevertheless, Yupita remains calm and unbothered as she continues with her daily activities.

The mother of two is active in various programs. In fact, Yupita has been named the head of a sewing community known as Mekar Basule. A rollercoaster of emotions took place from the start of the group’s program where the number of participants was not enough and those who did participate, would come home at extremely late hours. Fortunately, the children and husbands of these women give endless support. Some husbands would even take over the responsibility of managing the house and taking care of the kids as their wives continue to participate in the sewing program. This becomes the stimulus that ignites the excitement from these mothers to join the group and continue to sew. As of now, the group comprises of seven mothers. With the existence of such group that has been joined since May 2016 to July 2016, Yupita and the rest of the members become more involved in the surrounding community.

Other than becoming more skilled at sewing, Yupita and the other members have submitted a proposal to increase the number of sewing machines. Fortunately, the proposal turned into a blessing as Yupita was able to receive three sewing machines – one being an electrical sewing machine, while the other two are manual sewing machines. With these sewing machines, the group was able to sew more and increase their production. As a result, more orders for clothes such as uniforms continued to increase too.

Despite the evident success and achievements, it cannot be denied that the group still encountered various difficulties with the sewing machines. At certain times, they would have to outsource with the cost of Rp. 10,000 per-item. With this in mind, they hope to purchase better quality sewing machines in order to eliminate this particular difficulty.

The presence of a platform facilitated by World Vision – Kuburaya Operational Office in West Kalimantan -  to develop sewing skills, women like Yupita and other members have a source of income to provide access to education for their children. Moreover, they hope to see another program to help train the men in their families regarding managing their income and economy in order to achieve the desired quality of life for themselves and their children.

Through it all, the support and contributions from World Vision Indonesia in the community of Korek Village is undeniably significant and beneficial. In particular, these contributions have improved the economy of mothers and their families. Yupita and other members of the sewing group express their gratitude to World Vision Indonesia for their generosity in providing useful training programs for their community.
