World Vision responds to drought-affected families in Sri Lanka
World Vision Sri Lanka has joined an inter-agency response project, funded by Start Fund, to provide unconditional cash grants to drought-affected communities in Sri Lanka.
"The sporadic rains can be misleading. The dry spell affects thousands of people particularly the farming communities. They badly need our help," says Dhanan Senathirajah, World Vision Sri Lanka’s National Director.
In March, the government reported that nearly 80,000 people need urgent basic necessities like food, water and livelihood support.
As part of the consortium, World Vision Sri Lanka will work with government agencies to address the needs of the families and to ensure no duplication in providing aide.
The project with four consortium members from international relief agencies aims to reach out to 1,700 families in Moneragala, Puttalam, Batticaloa, Kurunegala and Kilinochchi districts.
The primary focus will target vulnerable families who are struggling to provide for the basic needs. “We are concerned about the welfare of our children primarily on their health and education. Children are the most vulnerable during emergencies,” adds Senathirajah.
In the initial phase of the response, World Vision aims to assist 750 farmers in two districts with the investment of USD 100,000 targeting 500 households in Nawagaththegama and Puttlam districts, including 250 households in Bibile and Moneragala districts.
