The Improving Maternal and Child Health Project in Takeo

Phnom Penh – A signing ceremony of “the Improving Maternal and Child Health Project in Takeo Province Phase 1” was held at the Embassy of Japan on March 1, 2017. The agreement was signed by H.E Mr. HORINOUCHI Hidehisa, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia and Mr. MATSUOKA Takuya, Project Manager of World Vision Japan, witnessed by Dr. Nuth Sinath, Director of Takeo Provincial Health Department, Dr. Mech Sambo, Director of Kirivong Operational District and Dr. Vorng Sara, Director of Koah Andaet Operational District.

I hope this project will lead to joyful laughter of many mothers and children in Cambodia.

In the ceremony, the Government of Japan has agreed to provide US$466,431 to World Vision Japan for the project. Through the Phase 1 of the project, World Vision Japan will provide trainings for health workers and health volunteers and health education for mothers, aiming to improve the quality of and accessibility to health services and reduce the rate of malnourished children and water-borne diseases. There will be installation of equipment for post-delivery rooms and improvement of sanitation facilities at the health centers in Kirivong and Koah Andaet Operational Districts in Takeo Province. 

Mr. Takuya said, “We will work closely with the Government of Cambodia, especially Ministry of Health, during the implementation of this project over the course of 3 years. I hope this project will lead to joyful laughter of many mothers and children in Cambodia.”

The project will contribute to the reduction in maternal and child morbidity and mortality in the 2 Operational Districts in Takeo Province. It aligns with the Cambodia Government Ministry of Health’s strategies per their health operational districts. Through Phase 1 implementation, the project will benefit over 300,000 people including 9,480 children under two years of age and 6,538 pregnant and lactating women in the targeted areas.

To achieve the goal, World Vision Japan will work in close collaboration with World Vision International in Cambodia to implement the project successfully.
