Phnom Penh – “I can do it, what about you?” is the theme of the Youth Learning Day organised by urban youth from the capital of Phnom Penh. The event, held on 25th February 2017 with over 130 youth in attendance, is a new initiative by World Vision to implement programmes in urban areas. It aims to engage with, and foster relationships among youths in communities, living on the street in the city, and also from neighbouring Prey Veng province.

The Youth Learning Day builds the capacity of youth groups by teaching them skills to carry out volunteer work within their community

During the event, Lean Chanraksmey, a youth from Phnom Penh; and Mok Kong, a youth from Kampong Thom province shared their experiences of attending the Regional Youth Coordinated Mekong Ministerial Initiative against Trafficking (COMMIT) in Laos. Furthermore, the youngsters showcased their talent through creative clothing design. A video on health and hygiene was also screened to show their contribution through the use of digital media.

The Youth Learning Day builds the capacity of youth groups by teaching them skills to carry out volunteer work within their community, inspiring them to learn and help each other, as well as encouraging networking and connecting to build resilience and access to information.

The Youth Learning Day is part of World Vision International Cambodia’s Urban Vision Initiative programme, which has been working and partnering with 39 youth groups, 31 churches, nine Agriculture Cooperatives, 41 Child Protection Committees, 25 Non-Governmental Organisations and 47 Village Disaster Management Groups to ensure children and youth are protected from all forms of abuse, and infants are well nourished and living in a hygienic environment.

To date, World Vision works with 816 youth groups which have benefitted nearly 15,000 youth in 2016.
