The long agonising wait for Tropical Cyclone Pam - a category 5 cyclone - ended on Friday 13 March (evening) as it hurtled into Vanuatu, a country of an estimated 250,000 people. It also hit a number of remote islands as it moved across the eastern part of the Solomon Islands.

World Vision is acutely concerned about the wellbeing of children and their families affected by Cyclone Pam. The cyclone brought intense winds (up to 275kph) to the island nation, damaging homes and other buildings, and affecting telecommunications. Heavy rains and flooding have brought the threat of landslides.

World Vision’s team spent Saturday driving throughout the communities in Port Vila, assessing the situation in the capital city but communications and logistics remain difficult. Additional information is expected to continue to come in as the team is able to reach more remote parts of the country.
