Increasing income and improving the economic resilience of communities in remote and hard to reach areas is the aim of World Vision’s Community Economic Development project.

This week, staff from World Vision in East Malaita are being trained to set up and manage Producer Groups in their target communities.

“The training will enable Community Development Facilitators to sit down with communities and help them work out what products can be sold for income, to which market and how,” said CED officer, George Ganiau.

The focus of the training is to build the knowledge base and capacity of Community Development Facilitators, as they will be responsible for mobilizing communities to take up economic activity.

“So far, pigs, fish, honey and cooked food have been identified as potential products.”

Twelve World Vision staff are taking part in the training. Training participants will also travel to four communities in East Malaita for training with Producer Groups and discussions on market access, with World Vision Pacific Timor-Leste, Economic Advisor Colin Dyer.

The Community Economic Development project in East Malaita is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and World Vision New Zealand, is being implemented by World Vision Solomon Islands.
