The corner of dreams

“On rainy days, the only thing that we worry about is that corner,” said the mother as she pointed her finger to the bookshelf standing next to a table with a computer on top. “How can she study when all her books are wet?”

Xuan Anh, the 12-year-old girl living in a low income family of Cuong Chinh commune, Tien Lu district, Hung Yen province is the owner of this study corner.

Looking at the corner, Xuan Anh’s mother was reminded of her husband’s decision to buy the computer for their girl: “World Vision has no responsibility for our daughter but they still help her, how can the parents like us do nothing for her?”. At that time, the parents made many people surprised as girls’ education was usually taken lightly in rural areas.

The computer provides Xuan Anh with unlimited access to new knowledge.

Not only supporting their daughter’s studying, Xuan Anh’s parents also encourage her to partipipate in all extracurricular activities since she became a sponsored child of World Vision at the age of five. Xuan Anh has always been an active member of all World Vision’s activities such as school and commune’s children clubs. She can stand in front of her peers to talk about issues relating to children such as hygiene, child injury and life skills.

The used-to-be shy girl has become so confident now. “Before, I didn’t have many friends and I only hung out with a few classmates. Now I always greet first when I meet new faces,” proudly said Xuan Anh.

Xuan Anh hopes that when she grows up, she can become a doctor and a good inspiration for her little sister Khanh Huyen.

Seeing her daughter improve day by day, Xuan Anh’s mother felt more motivated as she patted her daughter on the head and said: “Your father and I may not have a lot of money but we would do anything for you to study and pursue your dream.”
