Ntcheu District Council has thanked World Vision Malawi for working hard to secure the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project for ntcheu saying it will ease prevailing water challenges.

Speaking during a startup workshop of the Charity Water funded grant held at Hotel Victoria in Blantyre, District Commissioner for Ntcheu, Smart Gwedemula said Ntcheu is in great need.

“Mpira dam which has been supplying water for the district has dried up and we are in a water crisis as a district”, he said.
Water bowsers have been dispatched to the districts of Balaka and Ntcheu for the past two weeks.

“Therefore, the 76 boreholes to be drilled by World Vision will go a long way in addressing this prevailing problem”, he added.

With the grant further geared to promote sanitation in the areas of Traditional Authority Ganya and Phambala, Gwedemula said this has been a neglected development issue for the past couple of years.

World Vision will also facilitate the construction of 10 toilets that will be seven holed as well as strengthen WASH in schools.

Speaking, World Vision Malawi’s Business Development Director, Shallin Chikoto called upon the council to give its maximum support to the project so that children and mothers can benefit.

“As World Vision, we are doing all this to ensure that we help our communities achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 6.1 which calls for achieving universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.

The World Vision and Charity Water Partnership started in 2013. Charity Water is a United States based organisation dedicated to providing water to developing communities.

Through this partnership, 412,070 people in Malawi have been reached with water and sanitation interventions.
