WASH Behaviour Change Capacity Statement

Changing the behaviour of individuals, groups, and organisations is critical to maximising human flourishing. Behaviour change cuts across all technical approaches and critical contexts within water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programming. In addition to changing the behaviour of individuals, transforming social norms and reducing stigma in communities around topics like gender and disability are also key to realising WASH and other development outcomes. Read this capacity statement for information about World Vision's experience, distinctives and approaches for behaviour change in WASH.

Technical Brief: Nurturing Care Groups

Delivering transformative WASH at scale is challenging, in part because delivering behaviour-change interventions at the necessary frequency, fidelity, and coverage levels is difficult. Further complicating the issue, behaviours may be individual, influenced by social norms, or require collective action. The Nurturing Care Group (NCG) approach is a model where 10-12 women chosen by groups of 10-15 neighbouring households each meet with health promoters, and then relay messages back to their neighbours every two weeks.

Technical Brief: WASH Business Centres

Because of challenges with water point functionality and low rates of basic household sanitation (7%) and hygiene (8%), World Vision Ethiopia introduced WASH Business Centres (WBCs), a one stop center for production, distribution, and sale of essential products for constructing WASH facilities (e.g., latrine slabs) and performing key behaviors (e.g., liquid soap for handwashing).
