KEY HIGHLIGHTS

The threat of Ebola:The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) risk assessment has been raised to ‘very high’. This follows confirmation of two new cases in Tchomia in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Surveillance has been intensified at points of entry.

Ebola preparedness: Following the outbreak of the Ebola Virus in the North Kivu Province of the neighbouring DRC at the beginning of August 2018, there is an increased threat of cross-border spread into South Sudan.

Stand-off at Malakal PoC unresolved:The standoff at the Malakal Protection of Civilians site (PoC), in Upper Nile state, continues to hamper the delivery of basic services at the health facilities as youth demand that non-local staff working in the health facilities leave. This has also resulted to a gap in the delivery of quality services.

People are returning home:An estimated 63,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who had fled to Mingkaman IDP settlements since 2017 have finally returned home. The return has been largely attributed to relative safety and security in Bor and Twic East counties.

Support for returnees is urgent: Families returning to their homes have been left extremely vulnerable, as they start to rebuild their lives. Providing livelihoods support to them will give them a major boost as they rebuild their lives.
