Responding to Disasters

Quick Facts
In 2008, World Vision:
  • Helped the populations of 60 countries through relief and disaster mitigation
  • Distributed 549,197 metric tonnes of food to 8,500,000 people

  • Featured work
    Emergency logistics and supplies pre-positioning

World Vision responded to disasters and reduced the impact of relief emergencies in 60 countries in 2008, quickly providing food, water, shelter and other essentials to those in need.

World Vision identifies places at risk of disaster, prepares resources and staff in high-risk zones, and builds capacity and resilience among communities to help them protect themselves before an emergency and rebuild afterwards.

Each financial year, World Vision makes US$6 million available for urgent disaster responses. For large-scale emergencies, US$100,000 can be allocated immediately to save lives. Much larger funding can be mobilised within hours.
