Children of Alor- the Agents of Transformation

Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Giving a space for children to participate in a society is not always easy to do. Most of the challenges actually come from adults who try to assist them. The perception of adults in directing children sometimes becomes a factor that limits children to explore more.

Wahana Visi Indonesia at Alor has tried to increase child participation in society through several trainings and activities, not only for children but also for adults who work as child facilitators.

At the beginning of 2013, the children of who participated in the Child Forum observed a fulfillment of their rights in their communities. At first, many adults did not want to hear their opinions.

But, after several dialogues and assistance from committed community leaders, their opinions became significant. For example, on National Child Celebration Day, the Child Forum raised an issue, did research and reported the story in the form of a documentary film and musical stage performance.

"I am happy to be a part of Child Forum. I now understand that gaining education is not only talking about grades, but also knowledge that will be useful for our future,"

One of audience members, Sophie Dida, a parent and junior high school teacher, said that the movie has been really touching.

"We are really proud to see the children's performance. The existence of the Child Forum is good for child development. It should be supported by all parties, especially government," said Dominggus Malaka, Chief of Alor Parliament, in his speech.

The children are becoming better at critical in thinking and better able to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the activities they initiate.

"I am happy to be a part of Child Forum. I now understand that gaining education is not only talking about grades, but also knowledge that will be useful for our future," said Novita, 18, member of Child Forum.

A few other members of Child Forum:

  • Yohana, 15, became the representative of Alor for the Child Conference at Soe. She was nominated as the National Child Representative in the education sector.
  • Daud, 15, is a current Chief of Student Council (OSIS) in his school.
  • Adimas, 15, is able to make marvelous speeches when he represents the Northwest Alor Region.
  • Albertina, 17, delivers inspiring stories about recovery from her illness and her desire to continue her education.

Their stories are becoming an inspiration to other children.
