Nurul's pure heart is changing Nias

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

Nurulia Lahagu isn't like other young women. The 25-year-old woman lives in Hili Mayo, a village in West Nias. Nurul, as she's usually called, dedicates her time and energy for villagers and children in the place where she was born and grew up. She wants to do something to save the life of children in Hili Mayo.

Hili Mayo is located 50 kilometers away from Gunungsitoli city, Nias Island. Those who want to come here need to ride public transportation and motorcycle for hours. She thanks God that Wahana Visi Indonesia started assisting Hili Mayo in 2011.

"I believe that serving others is my calling," said Nurul, explaining the reasons why she wants to work hard for villagers and children.

Through WVI, Nurul says she received training and knowledge especially about breastfeeding.  She started as a cadre for the Integrated Health Post (Posyandu). She also likes to visit Hili Mayo mothers and children to give socialization about healthy food and healthy life.

Her efforts with WVI have impacted her community's transformation. Through her hard work, 50 pregnant women in Hili Mayo frequently come to Posyandu. Even parents are gaining more awareness on healthy food for their children.

"With WVI's assistance, now I can assist and educate pregnant women about the importance of the first 1000 days of life for their babies," said Nurul. "Finally, I recognize my calling to serve mothers and baby in my village."

Nurul believes that now villagers and children of Hili Mayo can have a better future.
