2013 was both a challenging and successful year for World Vision Solomon Islands (WVSI). The most significant event was the 8.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that swept through remote Temotu Province on 6 February 2013.  More than 6,500 people were affected and 23 communities were substantially damaged following the disaster. World Vision played a leading role in the response and was appointed by the National Disaster Management Office to co-ordinate the procurement and shipment of food, water and essential items to Temotu.

WVSI’s long term development work continued to grow and strengthen in seven Area Programs including two new Area Programs that were officially opened in Central Province and East Malaita.  WVSI expanded its successful project models in early childhood education, adult literacy, economic development and employment, community-based disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, maternal child health and nutrition, water supply, sanitation and hygiene and gender based violence prevention.
