Blessing of the garden

Friday, July 24, 2015

Wame, Papua province is well-known to have fertile soils that can grow vegetables, fruits, and peanuts well. However, not all of the people here understand the advantage of consuming healthy vegetables, many just sold their crops at the market. It was the reason that many children in Wame suffered from malnutrition.

Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) in Jayawijaya considered this issue important, so they worked together with the local government to change things. Based on the discussion with community members in October 2014, people agreed to start cultivating nutrition gardens so that their children would start eating the right things.

Wame people welcomed the plan of cultivating nutrition gardens. Based on the agreement, five groups each planted a different kind of plant- peanut group, a red bean group, a bean group, a soybean group and a carrot group. Through WVI's assistance in training, the villagers started to learn the right way to make vegetable plots and cultivate soil.

Wame villagers learned about plot size, drainage, and plant spacing. These new techniques produced amazing results.

A few months after planting season, the farming parents started giving their children carrots and peanuts. The rest of crops will be stored for the next planting season.

The children are healthier thanks to the nutrition gardens, so much so, that from a recent health report, no more children in Wame suffer from malnutrition.
