Village children are speaking fluent English

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

It is common that elementary school children in Jakarta can speak English fluently, but it is extraordinary in a remote place like South Nias.

How can children from Hilinawalo Fau Village in Fanayama speak English fluently?

This cannot be separated from the work of a children institution called Nias World, which is led by Pilius Dakhi, 29. Making use of a unfinished building measuring 8 x 7 meters that was constructed with the support of WVI's South Nias Operational Office, Pilius Dakhi and some of his colleagues introduce English to children 6 days a week.

Although the children learn in the unfinished building without proper light, they enthusiastically learn English sitting on the floor.

Frida, a second year elementary student, says that her school does teach English, so instead she attends Nias World's classes.

"I am glad to learn here, because I like English," says Frida in the sideline of her activity in the English class.

Pilius Dakhi explains that there are three groups of children studying English in Nias World. The first group is for children ages 7-8 years, the second group is for children ages 9-10 years, and the third group is for children ages 11-12 years. Children grouped in third group who have been learning English since 2013 have and they speak English fluently now.
