Giant Chess

Boys and girls of different ages in El Reposo, started taking “Giant Chess” lessons. They use chess not only as a game, but also as a way of learning to work as a team. The children organize themselves, take roles and use reasoning. Activities like this will help them in their lives. In the sandy wastelands it’s also possible to learn by playing.

“Giant Chess” will develop children’s abilities in a healthy and fun way. Even the most restless children are improving their concentration and patience!

This is all part of our Social Empowerment Project, which is designed to strengthen abilities and organization, expression and management skills of boys, girls and teenagers, especially those who are members of Voluntad.org (World Vision’s children and youth clubs).

“Giant chess” has already been extended to 3 other communities. In the coming months activities for the boys and girls will continue with recycling workshops, fairs and pasacalles (street parades that feature traditional music and dances). It’s an exciting agenda for our young people and, most importantly, it’s based on their interests and needs.
