Fishing hopes: From fear of floods to a thriving fishing livelihood in rural South Sudan
For years, seasonal flooding in Akuem boma, Aweil East County, left Rebecca Abuk and her family struggling to meet basic needs. In August 2025, her situation began to improve when she joined a fishing group through the WACRESS Project, a Government of South Sudan initiative supported by the Global Environment Facility and United Nations Development Programme, and implemented by World Vision to help communities strengthen their resilience to climate shocks.

Hope grows where clean water flows in remote South Sudan village
At the water point in Panaam, a remote village in Panyikang County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state, children gather around the tap stand, filling their buckets with clean water. With support from the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SSHF), World Vision installed a new water point in the community, giving families access to safe and clean water closer to their homes.

Since April 2023, the crisis in Sudan has forced thousands of families to flee violence. Amidst uncertainty, they seek safety across the border with little more than what they can carry. Among them is Angelina Mawien Deng, a South Sudanese and a mother of eight whose journey back to South Sudan reflects the reality faced by many. Her story is just one of countless others—families uprooted by conflict, returning home to rebuild their lives from nothing, and relying on community support and humanitarian assistance to begin again.
