Enjoying early childhood education in a home-based care centre

Adelina de Castro is delighted her community in the sub-village of Uaitoqui chose her to be a volunteer early childhood tutor.

Adelina's three sons are among the 20 children taught in the village which lies an hour-and-a-half’s drive along a bumpy unpaved road from the district centre of Baucau in Timor-Leste.

She’s seen a big change in all the children since the ECCD programme began a year ago. “Previously they only knew how to play alone but they didn’t learn anything. Now they can read, write, count, recognize letters and they know to greet older people. They seem so happy.”
