DR Congo: Thousands at Risk of Cholera Amid Critical Water Shortage in Nyiragongo
This article highlights a growing humanitarian crisis in Nyiragongo territory, north of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where thousands of displaced people are facing severe water shortages. Formerly a refuge for people fleeing conflict in Rutshuru and Masisi, Nyiragongo now struggles to provide even the most basic necessity: clean water. Testimonies like that of Florence, an internally displaced person (IDP), illustrate the dire situation. People wait for hours in long lines, sometimes traveling up to 8 km, for a single chance at water, which is not only infrequent and unreliable but also costly. This crisis particularly affects children and infants, who are exposed to heat, hunger, and dangerous conditions near water points. The article calls for urgent humanitarian intervention to restore emergency water access, distribute hygiene kits to prevent disease outbreaks, and ensure protection for the most vulnerable.
