On 27th September 2016, World Vision Tanzania provided emergency relief for children and families impacted by the 5.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Kagera region, in the Western corner of Tanzania on 10th September 2016.

The aid was handed over to Kagera Regional Commissioner Major General (retired) Salum Kijuu by Cluster Livelihood Specialist, Mr Prosper Mujungu.

The items included 640 tarpaulin sheets and 960 blankets worth more than 46 million Tanzania Shillings. Speaking at the RC’s office Mr Mujungu said: “World Vision Tanzania will continue to work with the government and once the purchasing process is completed we will donate mosquito nets and building materials worth more than 200 million”.

The RC commended World Vision Tanzania support and said the items would be distributed to the earthquake survivors through an already set up mechanism.
The earthquake caused the death of 17 people and left 253 with injuries.  About 840 houses collapsed and 5,000 damaged.  According to Tanzania Geology Agency, the earthquake was caused by movement of the tectonic plates in the west arm of the East African rift valley.

In emergencies, World Vision works around the clock to bring hope and relief to children and families whose lives are threatened in the wake of disasters.
