World Vision Kenya Drought Response Overview
Monday, February 27, 2017

World Vision Kenya is responding in 15 of the 23 counties that are currently most affected by drought. We are responding through food assistance and resilience intervention.

In 6 of the 15 counties, namely, Kilifi, Marsabit, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Baringo and Turkana. World Vision Kenya is supporting 212, 701 people including children with food assistance in partnership with World Food Program (WFP) and respective line ministries within the Counties. In addition, World Vision Kenya continues to support families in these areas to build assets and learn to produce surplus and alternative food as a way of enabling them to build resilience in anticipation of short and long rains.

World Vision Kenya partners with the national and county governments in planning so that we can have an appropriate and well-coordinated response to the current disaster. We also participate in data collection and sometimes joint resource mobilization. The plans are used to raise funds (including reprogramming development funds), in order to carry out an integrated response targeting the most vulnerable.

World Vision also works with targeted communities to establish the most vulnerable people that will include children, pregnant and lactating mothers, persons with disability, among others.

We are also doing our best to raise awareness on the drought, primarily through the media. We want to mobilise support for the response as well as influence decision makers for enhanced response to those affected by the droughts. There are so many perspectives on the impact of the current drought which we need to be aware of, particularly its impact on children, on those with disability, on education, health, livestock and various contexts (pastoral, agro-pastoral, rural and urban).

We must do all we can to adequately address the plight of the affected communities.
