Children taking on leadership roles

Monday, August 11, 2014

Ajay, 17, was a very shy boy until he joined a child club in school when he was in grade four. Today he is the chairperson of the District Child Club Network in Rupandehi and works actively on issues related to children and their rights.

As a chairperson he works with journalists, child care centres, lawyers, the District Development Committee, the District Child Welfare Board and other stakeholders to advocate for the issues affecting children like child marriage and child labour.

Ajay says proudly, “After being elected the chairperson I have been able to put forward my opinions on behalf of other children with policy makers.”

Prior to his leadership role, his regular involvement in the child club helped him build confidence and skills in public speaking. He used the opportunities to take part in debate, art and speech competitions.

His child club was also active in raising awareness on health and sanitation in the community and contribution to events like Open Defecation Free declarations.

World Vision has supported 39 child clubs in Rupandehi, building capacity of children on leadership, child club management and extra-curricular activities. At present, three children from those child clubs are now in the core committee of District Child Club Network in Rupandehi.
