Traditionally, organizations like World Vision distributed wheelchairs to people with mobility limitations in the same way we would give a bicycle: you see someone in need and you donate.  However, in 2008 the World Health Organization published the Guidelines on the provision of manual wheelchairs in less resourced settings. These guidelines require that people with mobility limitations receive a full clinical assessment, prescription, fitting, and user training to ensure that their wheelchair is appropriate for their condition, activities, and environment. Without this full range of services, complications from inappropriate wheelchairs can be serious and wheelchair users can die from untreated pressure sores. Unfortunately, many organizations continue to run distribution model wheelchair programs.

The research we have conducted pinpoints how organizations like World Vision can ensure that the WHO Guidelines are followed and where we can provide value-add to the process through linkages with rural communities and local government, disability inclusion efforts, and logistical support.
