Breastfeeding Week: breastfeeding keeps babies healthy

Wednesday, August 3, 2016

There have been several myths among mothers in remote areas and mothers from ethnic minority groups, passed from generations to generations, which prevent babies from enjoying their mothers’ breastmilk during the first 2 years after birth. One popular myth is that breastmilk is unclean and unhealthy for babies.

With World Vision’s support, commune health workers, and community midwives (traditional birth attendants) received trainings to provide consultancy and support mothers in ensuring proper natal care and safe motherhood. Mothers are highly encouraged to exclusively breastfeed their newborn during the first six months and keep this breastfeeding on-going until their babies reach 2 years old.

Top 5 list - Why Breastfeeding is The Best Start for a Baby:
1) Breast milk is perfect for baby's growth - it has the perfect mix of vitamins, protein and fat
2) Breast milk keeps babies healthy - it has antibodies that help fight off viruses and bacteria
3) Breast milk makes children smart - babies who were breastfed have higher IQ scores, some research indicates
4) Breastfeeding creates a special bond - skin to skin touching and eye contact help babies feel secure
5) Breastfeeding improves the mother's health - Women who breastfeed heal faster after child birth and have a lower risk of certain types of cancer and diabetes
