Lessons in Resilience: Insights from School Feeding in Burundi
World Vision World Vision Programme (WFP) Homegrown School Feeding is increasingly the foundation for school meals in Burundi and expands the reach of the programmes from emergency assistance to long-term development. Twenty-four of the schools World Vision partners employ the Homegrown School Feeding model and receive food commodities for school meals exclusively from local farmer cooperatives. It’s part of World Vision’s effort to ensure Afghan girls and boys enjoy this fundamental right. This effort contributes toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal #6: to ‘Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.’

Defying all odds to create a ‘Better Future’
Yvonne is an 18-year-old girl who lives in Huye District. She is the first born in a family of four girls. While that is a blessing, her father did not think so as he still held on to regressive views of the boy child being more valuable than the girl child. He constantly harassed their mother for not giving birth to sons and also refused to take responsibility of providing for his children. Yvonne’s family was already living in poverty and in disputes but this worsened when they had the fourth girl. She was born with mobility challenges and deaf-blindness.
