About us

The Solomon Islands is a group of more than 900 islands located in the south-west Pacific Ocean. The majority of Solomon Islanders live in small villages scattered over about a third of the islands. The nation has a population of just over half a million people. The 2009 census indicated that the population is young, with more than 40 per cent of the population under the age of 15 and around 60 per cent under 25 years of age.[i]

Political unrest and tensions between 1999 and 2003 had a big impact on communities in the Solomon Islands. Homes, schools and health clinics were destroyed, supplies and services were disrupted and there was a decline in livelihoods, health and well-being. With the arrival of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) in June 2003, the security situation improved, displaced families started returning home, and government services were re-established.
