Climate Chains

Adria, 10, Philippines

The chain and lock show how things stop when bad weather hits. Behind them, you can see empty seats in the classroom, quiet because no one can come. Classes are cancelled more often now because of storms and floods, making it hard for kids like us to learn.

The children
of Milkvita slum

Fatema, 17, Bangladesh

These small children live in slums by the drains. In the afternoon, they feel free to sit and play on the dirty streets by the drains. When it rains even a little, their houses are submerged in the dirty water of the drains.

Guidance for children and young people when collecting content

So you’re ready to go take photos and videos! There are a few things that are important to keep in mind as you go so you can keep yourselves and anyone you talk to safe.

Consent
Before we take a photo or interview someone, it is always important to ask permission! You wouldn’t want someone to just shove a camera in your face or publish a photo of you without asking if it’s alright.

You want to make sure you explain why you’re doing the project, and how their photos will be used. Make sure you tell people, and if they say they’re happy to be in a photo or video, you need to record what we call their ‘consent.’ If the person/people in your photograph is/are under 18, you also need to get consent from their parent or a responsible adult – this can be their mum or dad, a teacher, or any adult who is responsible for them.

For the consent, we have a form that you need to fill out and ask them to sign. (download here)

Do no harm
As a charity, we talk a lot about Do No Harm – this means that whatever World Vision is doing, the most important thing is to make sure we aren’t making a situation worse for someone or causing them harm. Never do anything that’s going to put yourself, or the people that you’re talking to, in danger. No photographs are worth anyone’s safety!

Think about where you are when you’re doing a story
If you’re doing a story about child labour, it’s probably not a good idea to take photos or video somewhere near the child’s workplace - you wouldn’t want their boss to get upset and punish them for speaking to you!

Hiding identities
Sometimes if someone is in a dangerous position in like child labour or child marriage we need to make sure no one will recognise them – what we call ‘hiding their identity’ - in your photograph, so no one can punish them for speaking, or take advantage of them because they are vulnerable. This means that you’ll have to hide their identities to keep them safe, and ask what name they would like to be called in your submission.

We also need to think about the way that you take photos of them differently, so you don’t show their face. You could take photos of their shadow, maybe their hands, maybe a close-up of a toy or object that they’re hiding their face behind, or something that symbolises the story that you’re trying to tell. Remember, the most important thing is to not show their identity, which could put them in danger or leave them vulnerable to exploitation.

Keep yourself safe
If you’re going out to take a photo in some new area or are meeting people that you don’t know, always tell an adult where you’re going and maybe take a friend with you for extra support.

Reporting when you need to
If you discover that someone is being treated badly while you’re taking a photo, always report it to an adult in your life. It’s important to never promise to keep someone’s secret, because if they are in trouble or in danger it’s important to be able to tell someone and get them help.
