World Vision Afghanistan (WVA) is a child-focused international humanitarian, development and advocacy organisation working with families, communities and children themselves to nurture environments in which children can fulfil their potential and enjoy life in all its fullness. Afghanistan is one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, with over half of the population in need of humanitarian assistance and 3.7 million children suffering from malnutrition.
We are responding with urgent lifesaving assistance, while also aiming to help build resilience within communities, so that they are better equipped to handle shocks and crises in the long term. This supports people first in surviving, then in adapting and thriving. With a strong emphasis on partnership with communities, we work to ensure that our efforts are sustainable, effective and do no harm. WVA works at all levels of society, including with children, parents, teachers, village councils, religious leaders, officials from line ministries and provincial departments, and other national and international agencies.
World Vision has been working in Afghanistan since 2001, responding to multiple natural and man-made disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic, drought, earthquakes and floods. Following the August 2021 international withdrawal, as humanitarian needs were compounded by economic collapse, WVA quickly adapted its response, remaining needs-led in a fluid governance context and in response to the evolving legal requirements of the international community. Since August 2021, we have supported over six million Afghans, around half of whom are children.
