Step 1: Trust Building and Planning Stage
HOW A COMMUNITY GETS CLEAN WATER
Step 1: Trust building and planning stage
Providing clean water, dignified sanitation or imparting appropriate hygiene behaviours is not as simple as building a well, constructing a latrine or teaching people to wash their hands. Before any of this practical work can begin, there must be trust. Without trust and community ownership, projects aren't usually sustainable. Here is our approach to building trust:
- Phase 1: Spend 6 to 12 months building relationships and trust
- Phase 2: Work with communities to identify needs and assets, including existing skills and resources
- Phase 3: Upon project approval, conduct formal baseline surveys and mobilise the community to prioritise interventions, develop detailed action plans and initiate joint action
- Phase 4: Work within an agreed time frame to achieve set goals
