Statement by Lilian Mumbi kamanjo, World Vision Afghanistan Interim National Director

“Our hearts were broken and outraged by the attack on Sad Bistar Hospital in Kabul yesterday, 13 May, 2020. This violent attack caused the deaths and severe injuries of innocent people, including mothers and newborn babies.

When a newborn baby that has just entered this world is brutally and senselessly robbed of life, at a time when they are supposed to be cradled in their mother’s arms, one can’t help but think if there is anything crueler or more heinous.

For this to happen in a health care facility, where people come for help and support, where fellow NGOs and health care workers are working around the clock during the COVID-19 pandemic, makes this violent act a more sinister, cowardly and selfish crime.

World Vision strongly condemns this attack, and calls for an end to all violence against Afghanistan’s children. The people responsible for it must be held accountable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased at this utterly tragic time. ”
