Faith Leaders Joint Statement – Right to Food and Nutrition (Jubilee Year 2025)
DownloadFaith Leaders Joint Statement on the Right to Food and Nutrition
Affirming our moral and spiritual responsibility to end hunger and malnutrition
As part of the Jubilee Year 2025, faith-based organizations representing diverse traditions have come together to affirm that food is a sacred human right. Rooted in shared moral conviction and compassion, the statement calls for urgent global action to address hunger, malnutrition, and systemic inequality.
Every year, millions go hungry despite the world producing enough food for all. Faith leaders recognise this as not merely an economic failure but a moral crisis that demands renewed commitment to justice, solidarity, and shared responsibility.
The Statement calls for:
- Recommitment to enshrining the right to adequate food in constitutions and policies
- Reallocation of resources from military spending to humanitarian and social protection programs
- Investment in smallholder farmers, particularly women, who feed most of the world’s population
- Urgent climate action that protects food systems and supports community-based adaptation
- Cancellation of unsustainable debts hindering equitable development
- Meaningful participation of affected communities and children in decision-making
- Strengthening of social protection, including cash transfers and school meals
“Hunger in a world of plenty is not inevitable—it is a choice.”
This statement represents a united call to action by World Vision International, Caritas Internationalis, and the World Council of Churches, urging all governments, faith actors, and global citizens to ensure every person’s right to food, dignity, and wellbeing.
