More than 1 billion children live in poverty worldwide. While they are all vulnerable to the risk of undernutrition and disease, millions of them face the further burden of marginalization and discrimination, abusive relationships, or are living in catastrophic contexts. These most vulnerable children are critically at risk of violence in the home or community, and may be subject to trafficking, slavery or child labour, sexual abuse or exploitation, gang violence, drug addiction, unwanted pregnancy and forced abortion, forced marriage, social ostracism by their family and community, and other terrible situations. In addition, these children are also likely to miss the opportunity to receive education and are therefore not only denied their childhood, but also the opportunity to reach their full potential.
