In FY26 Q1, World Vision DRC took a bold step toward smarter connectivity and stronger mission impact by transitioning from costly VSAT services to Starlink. In a country as vast and logistically challenging as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, reliable internet is not a luxury, it is a lifeline. This transition is already transforming the way teams serve vulnerable children and communities, particularly in remote and fragile contexts. Beyond the technological upgrade, the change represents a strategic stewardship decision: reallocating resources from high connectivity costs to frontline programming where they matter most.

Why This Transition Matters

The transition to Starlink is helping the organisation reduce operational expenses related to internet connectivity across different regions of the country. World Vision DRC is experiencing a significant cost reduction. The resources saved through this change are being reinvested in programmes that protect children, strengthen livelihoods, support education, and improve emergency response.

“At World Vision DRC, we are committed to continuously adapting to emerging technologies so that we can better serve vulnerable communities,” said Albert Kodio, Support Services and Finance Director.

“The transition to Starlink reflects our determination to improve efficiency, reduce operational costs, and ensure that more of our resources reach the children and families who need them most.”

Benefits to World Vision Programmes

Operationally, the shift has been transformative. Field teams now benefit from stable connectivity in remote and high-risk locations, faster submission of Sponsorship content (CUV, CUP, CGV, CGP), improved compliance with global standards, and reliable access to grant platforms such as UNDP, 1JMS, and ENABLE, supporting the development of more than 10 donor proposals. Data collection in schools and communities is now timely and accurate, reducing programme delays previously caused by weak internet connections. Real-time data access has accelerated decision-making and strengthened collaboration between field offices, the National Office, and regional teams.

“A few years ago, sending reports or uploading sponsorship content could take hours, sometimes days,” explained Ilande Kayumba, Kongo Central Cluster Manager.

“With Starlink, our work is faster, smoother, and far more efficient. What used to be a technical obstacle is now a powerful enabler of impact,”, he added.

Operational Impact in the Field and Stewardship in Action

Staff across different zones are already noticing positive changes in their daily work. Improved connectivity has increased productivity, reduced frustration, and strengthened digital inclusion within teams. Communities are also experiencing indirect benefits through faster service delivery, improved responsiveness, and more consistent programme implementation. Through this transition, World Vision DRC is demonstrating responsible stewardship by reducing operational costs and redirecting resources toward programmes that transform the lives of vulnerable children. The move from VSAT to Starlink is more than a technological upgrade; it represents a commitment to innovation, accountability, and hope, ensuring that connectivity truly helps connect communities to a better future.
