In Menkao, in the commune of Maluku in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 14‑year‑old Isaac lives with his parents and brothers in a family that, until recently, struggled daily to survive.

Before World Vision’s intervention, Isaac’s life was marked by hunger, school instability, and uncertainty. The family’s income was insufficient to ensure regular meals or pay school fees. Like many vulnerable children in his community, Isaac was often sent home from school, watching his future slip away.

We didn’t eat well, and at school, we were often chased away because the fees were not paid,” Isaac recalls.

A Simple Support With a Lasting Impact

As part of its efforts to respond to the challenges faced by the most vulnerable children in Menkao, World Vision supported several households through income‑generating activities, including duck rearing. This initiative aimed to fight hunger, strengthen family livelihoods, and ensure continuity in children’s education.

Isaac’s family received a pair of ducks to start raising. Thanks to the household’s dedication and the support provided, the project grew rapidly.

World Vision gave us a pair of ducks. Today, we have reached 14 ducks,” Isaac explains proudly.

Out of this total, six ducks were sold. The income generated allowed the family to pay school fees, buy essential school supplies, and cover food needs.

The money from the sale helped us with school, food, and even preparing for Christmas and New Year,” he adds.

A Relieved Family and a Future Taking Shape

Today, the family still keeps six ducks, which Isaac’s father continues to raise as an investment for the future. This activity has strengthened the household’s autonomy and reduced its vulnerability to economic shocks.

Isaac’s father, Abraham, expresses the depth of his gratitude:

This assistance relieved me a lot. As a parent, I was very limited, especially concerning my children’s health and education. Without this help, I could do nothing.

At school, Isaac has regained confidence and stability. He particularly enjoys religious education and now dreams of becoming a heavy‑vehicle driver.

A Broader Community Impact

Beyond Isaac’s family, this initiative has supported many vulnerable households in Menkao, helping to combat hunger and malnutrition while reinforcing child protection and access to education.

Today, we have something to rely on for our future,” Isaac concludes.

Full of gratitude, he shares a heartfelt message:

I sincerely thank World Vision and my sponsor for their support in our community. Thanks to their help, my family eats better, I go to school regularly, and I can dream of a better future. May God bless you for everything you do for us”, said Isaac.

Thanks to World Vision’s support, children like Isaac are no longer sent home from school, families have enough to eat, and hope is being restored across the community.
