The Echo of Impact: From Sponsored Child to Staff
By Christabel Mundike, Communications Officer, Zambia
As the world commemorates International Women’s Day, Brenda Musamba’s story stands as a clear example of how long-term investment in a girl can transform a life and a community.
Today, Brenda works as a Community Development Worker with World Vision Zambia. Confident and purpose-driven, she facilitates meetings, mentors young girls, and supports families as they build better futures. But her journey began very differently.
“I was once a sponsored child,” she says. “There was a time when I didn’t know if I would even finish school.”
Growing up in a community where opportunities were scarce, she watched many girls drop out of school. “Some of my friends stopped coming to class,” she recalls. “Not because they were not intelligent, but because circumstances forced them to. As a girl, you sometimes feel like your future is already decided for you.”
She feared her story would follow the same path.
“But through sponsorship, someone believed in me, even before I fully believed in myself. That support was more than books or materials. It was hope. It was dignity. It was someone telling me, ‘You matter. Your dreams matter.’”
Brenda remembers the moment she began to see herself differently. She started to participate more in class, set clear academic goals, and believed that she could complete her education. On this Women’s Day, she reflects on that journey. “When I was a child, other people were the light in my life,” she says. “They helped me see my worth and my potential. They guided me when things felt dark. Now, I have the privilege of being that light for others.”
In her current role, she works closely with mothers to strengthen their households and mentors girls at risk of dropping out of school. She has seen how empowering women transforms communities.
“When a woman is empowered, children stay in school, homes grow stronger, and communities thrive,” she says. “Women are not just beneficiaries of change. We are leaders, innovators, and problem solvers. Investing in a girl changes generations.”
As a Community Development Worker, Brenda now supports community savings groups, conducts child protection sessions, and works with local leaders to address harmful practices that limit girls’ education. She draws from her own experience to guide families and encourage girls to remain in school.
Looking back, Brenda speaks with gratitude and purpose. “My life is proof that sponsorship works. I am standing here today because someone believed in a little girl who had big dreams. Now we are raising hope, building futures, and breaking barriers. It is our turn to shine.”
For Brenda, every day is an opportunity to pass on the light she once received. Through mentorship, guidance, and community engagement, she continues to inspire girls and women to believe in themselves, pursue education, and dream without limits. Her journey reflects the impact of sustained support, strong community systems, and the power of believing in a girl before she believes in herself.
