Community Birthday Celebration Brings Joy to 7,000 Children in Mozambique

This August, the community of Itoculo in northern Mozambique marked the birthdays of nearly 7,000 children with a large celebration. The event, part of World Vision’s Community Birthday Celebrations, is a long-standing tradition in sponsored communities, designed to honour each child’s worth through inclusive gatherings that often combine faith, play, and community spirit.

With the generous support of sponsors, children received personal gifts and took part in a variety of fun activities. Each child, wearing a colourful birthday hat and holding a vuvuzela, celebrated not only their birthday but also the resources that promote growth, unity, and wellbeing, which are made available by World Vision, donors, and partners.
The day was filled with laughter, learning, and lively participation. Activities included reading competitions, football matches, hula-hoop challenges, and group exercises designed to spark creativity, encourage teamwork, and strengthen friendships. More than a festive event, the celebration became a space for children to express themselves, share their stories, and experience a renewed sense of hope and belonging.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for children to grow in an environment where they can share their everyday adventures, inspire and be inspired, build friendships, and deepen their connection with the world around them,” said Lígia Francisco, Child Sponsorship Coordinator.

Among the many joyful faces was 10-year-old Suraia, who excelled in the hula-hoop contest and proudly received a new school backpack. Yet for her, the true gift was the spirit of togetherness. “It was nice because I realised that birthdays help us to share happiness with one another,” she said with a smile.
Community Birthday Celebrations are more than just parties—they are living expressions of generosity, transformed into experiences that nurture wellbeing, dignity, and lasting memories. By turning individual birthdays into collective moments of joy, the initiative ensures every child feels seen, valued, and part of a community that believes in their future.
