Chosen for a Second Chance, Inspired to Build a Better Future

For many young people in Central Bougainville, completing Grade 10 can mark the end of their education journey due to limited opportunities and financial constraints. Recognising this challenge, the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Sapotim Strongpela Meri Project, supported by the European Union and implemented by World Vision Papua New Guinea, has provided 25 school leavers with a second chance to continue their education and develop vocational skills that can lead to employment and brighter futures.

For these young people, being selected was more than just an opportunity. It was a sign that someone believed in their potential and their ability to succeed.

Among the beneficiaries is Jeaneta Girana, a 22 year old from Teperoi in Wakunai District. After completing Grade 10, she returned home to help her parents with gardening, marketing and household responsibilities. Like many school leavers, she faced uncertainty about her future and the challenges that often affect young people who are unable to continue their education.

"Staying away from school brings many challenges. Young people can easily be influenced by smoking and other activities in the community," said Jeaneta.

When Jeaneta learned she had been selected as one of the 25 beneficiaries, it renewed her hope and determination.

"This opportunity means so much to me. I am very thankful for the chance to continue my education. I want to complete my studies, find employment and become a good role model for my younger siblings," said Jeaneta.

For Jeaneta, the programme is not only helping her achieve her personal goals but is also inspiring her to encourage other young people in her community to value education and pursue their dreams.

Similarly, Chris Siwan from Tetero in Wakunai District faced uncertainty after completing Grade 10 in 2024. With few opportunities available, he remained in the village helping with daily activities while searching for a way to continue his education.

"After completing Grade 10, I stayed in the village and helped with daily activities. Living in the village is challenging because there are very few income opportunities," said Chris.

Chris has always dreamed of developing practical skills that would allow him to earn a living and contribute to his community. Being selected for the programme gave him renewed hope and a clearer path towards achieving that dream.

"When World Vision came into the community and explained the programme, it gave us a new opportunity to continue our studies and return to help develop our communities," said Chris.

Chris now hopes to pursue a career in carpentry and become a skilled technician.

"I am very grateful to World Vision and the European Union for giving me this opportunity. This is my chance and my time now," said Chris.

The stories of Jeaneta and Chris reflect the hopes and aspirations of all 25 school leavers supported through this initiative. Although they come from different communities and backgrounds, they share a common goal: to gain skills, secure meaningful employment, support their families and make a positive contribution to their communities.

Through its investment in education and vocational skills development, the European Union supported Sapotim Strongpela Meri Project, implemented by World Vision PNG, is helping young people move from uncertainty to opportunity while building a generation of confident, skilled and motivated future leaders.

For these 25 school leavers, being selected marks the beginning of a new chapter. What once seemed like an uncertain future is now filled with hope, purpose and possibility. Through the support of the European Union and the implementation of World Vision PNG, they are gaining the education, skills and confidence needed to shape their own futures, support their families and contribute to stronger communities across Central Bougainville. Their journeys demonstrate that when young people are given the opportunity to learn and grow, they can turn their ambitions into achievements and become powerful agents of positive change.
