Every month, more than 2,500 people walk through the doors of Kibingo Health Centre in Rutsiro seeking care. From maternity services and childhood immunizations to laboratory services, family planning, and treatment for non-communicable diseases, the health Centre is a lifeline for families across the community.

Behind these essential services is a partnership helping strengthen healthcare and improve the wellbeing of children and families.

Through its integrated health and nutrition programmes, World Vision Rwanda, in partnership with the Government of Rwanda and the local community, has supported Kibingo Health Centre with practical improvements that are making a difference for both patients and health workers.

For years, moving between different service points at the health Centre was a challenge, particularly during the rainy season. Nurses and patients often had to navigate muddy paths to reach consultation rooms, maternity services, and other departments.

To improve access, World Vision Rwanda supported the construction of a covered walkway connecting key service areas.

The improvement may seem simple, but its impact is significant.

“The walkway has made movement much easier for both patients and health workers, especially during the rainy season. It has improved the way we deliver services and created a more comfortable environment for everyone who comes to the health Centre,” says Christopher, Head of Kibingo Health Centre.

Fighting Child Malnutrition Together

Infrastructure is only part of the story.

One of the most significant areas of change at Kibingo Health Centre has been the fight against child malnutrition.

Through Professional Umuganda, World Vision Rwanda’s community-led initiative to combat child stunting and malnutrition, caregivers receive practical support to improve children’s nutrition using locally available foods.

The programme combines community participation with the Positive Deviance/Hearth (PDH) model, helping families rehabilitate malnourished children while equipping parents with the knowledge and skills to prevent malnutrition from returning.

And the results are encouraging.

Since the initiative began in December 2024, the proportion of children affected by malnutrition at Kibingo Health Centre has fallen from 32% to 16% by April 2026.

For Christopher, these numbers represent healthier children and stronger families.

“The support from World Vision Rwanda has gone beyond improving our infrastructure. Through Professional Umuganda and nutrition education, we have seen a significant reduction in child malnutrition. Parents are gaining the knowledge and confidence to provide balanced meals for their children, and the results are evident in the community.”

To strengthen these efforts, World Vision Rwanda also supported the construction of a modern nutrition demonstration kitchen at the health center.

Here, mothers and caregivers learn how to prepare nutritious meals using affordable, locally available ingredients. Through practical cooking demonstrations, families discover that healthy diets do not have to be expensive, they can be created from foods already available within their communities.

The kitchen also serves meals to patients receiving care at the health Centre, making it an important part of both treatment and nutrition education.

“The nutrition kitchen has become an important learning space. Caregivers leave with practical skills they can apply at home, helping ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals long after they leave the health Centre,” Christopher explains.

Building Healthier Futures

The progress at Kibingo Health Centre demonstrates how investments in healthcare, nutrition, and community engagement can work together to create lasting change.

By improving health infrastructure, equipping caregivers with practical nutrition knowledge, and strengthening community-led approaches to preventing malnutrition, World Vision Rwanda is helping children not only survive, but thrive.

For the thousands of families who visit Kibingo Health Centre each month, the impact goes beyond improved services.

It means healthier children, empowered parents, and a stronger foundation for healthier futures.
