“We are working now with our Area Development Programme (ADP) manager and the supplies will be distributed at schools where a doctor who visits every day will distribute the medicines,” said Gifts-In-Kind officer Colette Rizk.

Dispensaries in affected areas of Lebanon, namely Bekaa, Beirut, north Lebanon, south Lebanon and Marjeyoun will receive supplies. Dispensaries are available in the areas as external clinics, where doctors on a schedule will examine people and give them needed medicines.

The 2.5 metric tons of medical supplies consisting of technical equipment, high energy biscuits for children, and medical supplies such as antibiotics and analgesics were purchased from German medical aid organisation, Action Medeor with relief funding.

“The supplies were transported from World Vision’s Global Pre-positioning Relief Network (GPRN) warehouse in Frankfurt, Germany, to Brindisi, Italy, where they were then flown to Beirut,” said Kevin Cook, Communications Manager for the response.

Technical equipment, high energy biscuits for children, and medical supplies such as antibiotics and analgesics were purchased World Vision only knew of the plane’s arrival time several hours before the landing. Communications and security staff travelled through previously bombed, empty and insecure areas of Beirut in an effort to reach the airport ahead of the plane. They were forced to turn back, however, when the road became blocked by a massive petrol queue. They saw the plane from a distance but could not access the area.

The remainder of the World Vision relief supplies consisting of approximately 16,000 collapsible water containers, 96,000 water purification tablets, four water purification units, 2,000 hygiene kits, three 4x4 DAF trucks and a ‘Rubbhall’ (portable warehouse) is due to arrive in Larnaca, Cyprus on Sunday and then travel to Beirut on Monday.
