One of Wahana Visi Indonesia’s programs in health sector is homestead food production (nutrition garden). This program aims to decrease the under nutrition due to low food intake and to increase the access and availability of nutritious food in some remote areas, such as in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.

Nutrition garden is a small plantation with the concept of planted plants which has nutritional value for humans. This program utilizes the (back, front and side) yard of house as an access to the fulfillment of family nutrition. The hope is that there will be more people, especially the children, who can consume nutritious food through vegetables and fruits.

Regarding to this program, Wahana Visi Indonesia also facilitates training for the community. Nutrition Garden Training Phase I was held recently in West Manggarai. The training aims to strengthen and provide food sources for the village community, especially for parents who participate in Pos Gizi,  a group which focuses on improving the nutritional status of children under five years of age.

"Quickly, we have to mix all the solid bokashi fertilizer materials before it rains! Alyisious Nudin (40 years old) said while reversing the fertilizer mix. The father of two children is a leader of Wakas Group (a group whose members are mostly teachers of religion) of Wakas sub-village, Wae Bangka village, Lembor sub-district, West Manggarai Regency.

"I am happy to participate in Nutrition Garden Training Phase 1 which was facilitated by Wahana Visi Indonesia.  I have learned about manufacture of organic fertilizer such as solid and liquid bokashi, liquid fertilizer, MOL (Micro Local Organism) with all the ingredients around the house and some which is no longer used (garbage). I also found out that vegetables are similar to humans that require nutrients such as N (Nitrogen), P (Phospor) and K (Potassium)," Nudin added proudly.
