School journey: Through the mountains of Guangxi

Saturday, August 1, 2015

Students from a small village located deep in the mountains of Debao county, Guangxi, make the 1.5 hour trek to school.

Meiqian, 9, is a grade three student. Her parents are migrant workers so she is being taken care of by her grandfather.

The journey is tough, yet this is the only accessible way to school.

Sometimes they run together, hoping to reach school on time. And sometimes when the road is slippery, they hold hands and walk together.

Though it takes so long to go to school, Meiqian is always on time.

Meiqian is one of the top five students in class. A 2013 UNICEF report says that primary school net enrolment from 2008-2011 is 99.8 per cent.
