World Vision India aids Berhampur community in response to severe Cyclone Phailin
15 October 2013 -
World Vision India has begun relief distribution in Ganjam district, one of areas worst affected by Cyclone Phailin. Dry rations were distributed to 500 families in one of the settlements in Brahmapur.
The cyclonic storm, the strongest in 14 years, which made landfall on 12 October 2013, has left 14 people dead and has destroyed crops worth over Rs 2400 crore (approx. $394 million USD).
Although the Government’s effective evacuation efforts have saved the lives of many people, the impact and damage due to the cyclone has been huge. Many houses have been destroyed with walls falling down and roofs being blown away because of the strong winds and heavy rains. Around 200,000 houses are damaged in the Ganjam district of Odisha alone. According to the India Army, 14,515 villages in 12 districts are affected, leaving many villages inundated caused by the heavy rains.
