Comfort at School - No more Latrine!

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Today is World Toilet day! Access to improved drinking water and sanitation facilities are extremely important components of child health. The impacts of poor water and sanitation fall mainly on the rural and the most vulnerable population.

Many children in Mongolia do not have access to clean water or decent sanitation facilities. This is particularly evident in schools, many of which do not have adequate sanitation or drinking water sources. Poor water and sanitation leads to diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases.

World Vision Mongolia’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project aims to improve target communities' health outcomes by using improved sanitation facilities and water sources and adopting good hygiene practices, particularly in schools and kindergartens. Through this project, WASH facilities in schools, and knowledge about sanitation and hygiene (mostly latrine use and hand washing) are improved.

Some of the key focuses are:

  • Promotion of practices that improve child health,
  • Providing opportunities for lifelong education,
  • Encouraging strong family and community relationships,
  • Protecting the rights and interests of children.
