Lesotho Unites for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld on Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025

Event led by Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso to advocate for menstrual dignity and access to hygiene for every girl

Berea, Lesotho, 30 May 2025 – World Vision International Lesotho, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Natural Resources, UNICEF Lesotho, and other key stakeholders, will commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025 under the global theme: “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”

The event is scheduled to take place on the 30th of May 2025, at St. Theresa Primary School – Berea district and will be led by Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso, World Vision Lesotho’s Champion in Child Protection. The day aims to raise awareness on the importance of menstrual health and hygiene and reinforce the collective responsibility to ensure that no girl’s education or dignity is compromised due to menstruation.

The commemoration will include the distribution of hygiene packs to girls, symbolizing the importance of accessible menstrual products and safe, supportive environments in schools and communities. The initiative also aligns with efforts to promote improved hygiene practices and increased access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools, contributing directly to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education for All.

Over the past five years, World Vision has supported significant interventions to improve menstrual health management in schools, including:

  • The distribution of sanitary pads to over 1,100 girls.

  • Access to potable water in 53 schools and basic sanitation in 89 schools, with infrastructure designed to accommodate menstrual hygiene needs.

  • Permanent handwashing facilities in 668 schools to promote sustained hygiene practices.

This year's event will reinforce national collaboration across government, development partners, donors, and communities to continue addressing menstrual stigma, increase access to services and products, and support long-term, girl-centered WASH solutions.

Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025 serves as a platform to advocate for a future where every girl in Lesotho can manage her period with dignity and confidence, stay in school, and reach her full potential.
