USAID launched the Women Empowered for Leadership and Development (WELD) Project in September 2014. WELD targeted a total population of 3,800,131 (1,922,509 females, 1,867,622 male) people from a national population of 7,075,641. The WELD Consortium (World Vision, Action Aid SL, NMJD and AMNet) worked in seven districts in Sierra Leone where women are not well represented in parliament or local councils. The goal of the project was to increase women’s social, political and economic rights in Sierra Leone through increased participation and representation in decision making processes, gender sensitive planning, monitoring and reporting adopted at council, community and national levels, and increase a critical mass of organizations to influence gender policies at national level.
