Child Representative Liekolo Calls for Urgent Action on Universal WASH Access at ACERWC 47th Session
By Liekolo Montsi, Child Representative
Ladies and gentlemen,
Please allow me to acknowledge and appreciate the esteemed African Committee of Experts on the rights and welfare of the child
As we gather here today, we are reminded that every child has the fundamental right to live with dignity, safety and access to basic needs. Among these, access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene remains one of the most essential but some children do not have equal access to them.
The theme, " Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child " is both timely and urgent. Climate change, population growth and inadequate infrastructure have made water increasingly scarce in many regions. For children, this is not just an environmental issue, it is a matter of survival, health and education. Without safe water, children become more vulnerable to diseases, school absenteeism and poor development.
Access to clean water is directly linked to the realization of children's rights. It affects their ability to attend school, maintain good health and to become supportive members of the society. When children, especially girls travel long distances to fetch water, their safety is put at risk.
I would therefore like to urge the member states to strengthen their commitments and take practical actions to ensure that no child is left out. There should be investments in water, infrastructure, education on hygiene practices.
Let us remember that ensuring water access is not an act of charity but a responsibility and a right owed to children.
EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CHANCE TO THRIVE.
