In Karawa, in Nord Ubangi Province, World Vision DRC organised a new edition of the Chosen programme, with support from the World Vision Canada office. This initiative transforms the traditional sponsorship model: now, it is the children who choose their sponsors, not the other way around. This simple yet powerful gesture gives children a voice and restores their sense of dignity.

The event site was carefully prepared: tents were set up, decorations placed, banners displayed, and sponsors' portraits neatly arranged to honour each child’s choice. Parents accompanied their children to the venue, where the atmosphere was filled with emotion and anticipation.

Upon arrival, families received a warm welcome. The children were registered for identity verification, then joyfully danced their way towards the sponsors’ photos. Each child proudly made their choice, holding their sponsor’s photo with happiness. Afterwards, they wrote an introductory letter and were photographed with their chosen sponsor. The event concluded with a symbolic meal shared among children and their families in a festive atmosphere.

“My name is Elysée, I’m 11 years old. I came to celebrate this special event for us, the children. I am filled with joy to have chosen my dad and mum. Through them, I believe our community will be transformed,” said Elysée, his heart full of hope.

“My name is Gédéon, I’m 11 years old. When I chose my sponsor, I danced with joy! I chose a family with a dad, a mum, and a child like me. Thank you! I know that through them, Karawa will be transformed,” shared Gédéon enthusiastically.

The Chosen initiative is a relief for the community and parents of Karawa. They are the ones who will benefit from the development activities that will be implemented in this region by World Vision, where needs are still enormous.

“I am Mama Annie, Nounou’s mother. I was filled with joy when my daughter chose her sponsor. I know that with Chosen in our community, Karawa will truly grow and be transformed. May God bless you for this beautiful initiative,” expressed Mama Annie, moved by the experience.

“We are very happy about Chosen, now that sponsors are starting to send their photos for children to choose from. Before, it was the sponsors who chose the children. This time, Chosen really makes things easier for us,” explained Florence, a community volunteer.

“In the past, some community members thought we were deceiving them, but that was not true. Praise be to God for all you are doing by bringing Chosen to us, so that everything goes well. Thank you,” added Florence, highlighting the shift in perception.

“Chosen will never fade because God is almighty! That’s why we dance with joy and gratitude,” sang the children of Karawa in a festive atmosphere.
