DR Congo: Nexus Accelerator Fund save Children from Malnutrition in Binza and Nyemba
In the health zones of Binza and Nyemba, in the East of Democratic Republic of Congo, the nutritional crisis is a daily struggle. On this frontline, the Nexus Accelerator Fund project ensures that children living in areas affected by conflict, disaster, political instability, and chronic insecurity are not left behind. Since its launch in 2020, this programme, formerly known as Childhood Rescue, has already saved the lives of more than 4,800 malnourished children within its intervention area.
The Katwiguru health centre in Binza is one of the places where hope is rekindled. Egide Kiyonga, the head nurse, is a first-hand witness.
“Here, we manage cases of severe acute malnutrition. We are supported by the partner World Vision, which provides us with nutritional supplies and medicines,” he explains.
The project’s approach is twofold, combining curative treatment with prevention.
“In addition to this support at the health centre level, there is another support at the community level: sensitising the population through community relays,” Mr Kiyonga specifies.
This integrated strategy enables active screening within communities and rapid, adapted care in the health facility.
The process is well established: the most severe cases with complications are referred to an Intensive Therapeutic Feeding Unit, while others receive treatment directly at the centre. The results speak for themselves. In August 2025 alone, the Katwiguru centre recorded remarkable progress:
“We had 54 cases enrolled in the programme. We recently had 19 new admissions and 28 cases were discharged cured,” the nurse reports with satisfaction.
In Binza, the impact recorded for 2025 illustrates the scale of the commitment: 226 children treated for severe acute malnutrition. This life-saving treatment was made possible through the use of 187 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) 2,580 kg representing an energy value of more than 14 million kilocalories. Meanwhile, in Kalemie, 157 children were treated for moderate acute malnutrition, preventing their condition from deteriorating further.
The Nexus Accelerator Fund thus embodies World Vision’s promise: to stand alongside children and their communities during the most critical times. By providing both emergency and long-term support, the project does more than heal, it offers children a chance to survive, recover, and build a better future.
